The UW-Parkside men’s soccer team went without a goal for the first time this season Sunday as host Lewis ground out a 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win in Romeoville, Ill.

“This is one of those games, where I’ve got to scratch my head and say, ‘What just happened?’ ” UW-P coach Rick Kilps said. “To say we played well, somebody would think I’m crazy.

“You had to be there to witness it. We controlled so much of the match.”

The Rangers (10-3-2, 5-3-2 GLVC) had 11 corner kicks while the Flyers had zero. Parkside won the shot battle 14-13 and according to Kilps dominated possession the last 45 minutes.

“We just couldn’t find a way to put it in the back of the net,” Kilps said.

Lewis (9-3-1, 8-3 GLVC) got a pair of first-half goals from Nestor Hernandez — the first two minutes into the game. Kipp Cartwright and Charlie Bucio picked up assists for the Flyers.

Parkside plays at Illinois-Springfield on Friday.

UW-P women win

The UW-Parkside women’s soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back for a 2-0 GLVC victory against host Lewis in Romeoville, Ill.

Kristen Benson scored her third goal of the season three minutes into the contest off a Shannon Becker assist to stake the Rangers a 1-0 lead. At the 18:21 mark, Becker found Kahili Cheng, who put in her second goal of the season.

Parkside’s Cassie Glodowski posted the shutout, stopping five Flyers shots on goal.

With the victory, Parkside improved to 6-3-1 in the GLVC (7-3-2 overall).

The Rangers travel to Illinois-Springfield on Friday.
