Tremper tennis team nearly untouchable in subsectional
Fresh off its Southeast Conference Tournament title on Saturday, the Tremper tennis team had a near-perfect day in Monday’s WIAA Division-1 subsectional at Bradford.
The Trojans went 12-0 and advanced all seven flights to Wednesday’s sectional at Lake Geneva Badger.
Tremper finished first out of eight teams with 24 points and Bradford was second with 16. Central and Wilmot tied for sixth with four points.
Players reaching the semifinals at No. 1 singles and doubles and the finalists of the five other flights advanced to the sectional.
Not only did Tremper win all 12 of its matches on Monday, but it did so it decisive fashion. In their 11 matches (one victory was by default), the Trojans lost only 15 games.
Tremper’s singles players — John Carswell (No. 1), David Carswell (No. 2), Craig Sherwood (No. 3) and Patrick Georno (No. 4) — lost a combined four games.
John Carswell blanked Wilmot’s Bryce England, 6-0, 6-0, in his only match.
David Carswell blanked Wilmot’s Mitch Marks and Waterford’s Jared Schultz, 6-0, 6-0, in his two matches.
Sherwood defeated Central’s Payden Volbrecht, 6-0, 6-1, and Wilmot’s Robert Marksteiner, 6-0, 6-0, while Georno defeated Central’s Alex Sadlier, 6-1, 6-0, and Wilmot’s Kyle Welzen, 6-2, 6-0.
Tremper’s doubles teams of Connor Hildebrandt and Jake Humphreys (No. 1), Adam Gagliardi and Jake Riley (No. 2) and Eric Ciszewski and Jake Larsen (No. 3) also rolled.
Bradford qualified five flights for the sectional.
At No. 1 singles, Michael Savaglio blanked Waterford’s Robert Schibli, 6-0, 6-0, in his only match.
Mike Weber (No. 3 singles) and Santiago Mancheno (No. 4 singles) both went 2-0. In his first match, Weber outlasted Jacob Davies of Park, 6-3, 7-6 (2) before taking care of Jesse Sincock of Case, 6-3, 6-3. Mancheno dropped only three games in his two matches.
Bradford’s No. 1 doubles team of Florian Dorgerloh and Anthony Greco won their only match over Jeremy Collins and Nicholas Grasso of Case, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, David Capelli and Brett McNeil won handily in two matches, losing only five games.
Central had one sectional qualifier — Alex Ferruzzi at No. 1 doubles. He defeated Jeremy Shufelt of Case, 6-3, 6-2, in his only match.
