Tremper doubles team in state semis
Tremper’s top-seeded doubles team of junior Connor Hildebrandt and sophomore Jake Humphreys won three matches — the first two in three sets — to advance to the semifinals of the WIAA Division-1 State Individual Tournament on Friday at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.
After being idle in Thursday’s first round thanks to a bye, Hildebrandt and Humphreys defeated Sheboygan North’s Zach Gosse and Jack Trager in the second round, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3.
The Tremper duo then outlasted Madison West seniors Mitch Polelle and Bennett Mortenson in the third round, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Polelle and Mortenson were among the doubles teams seeded 9-16.

Hildebrandt and Humphreys capped their long day with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Gard Pecor and Trevor Katzban of Nicolet.
Going for Tremper’s first state doubles crown since Dave Amelotte and Matt Brothers in 1992, Hildebrandt and Humphreys (28-0) will take on fourth-seeded Bay Port seniors Eric Linskens and Kevin Lewis (14-0) in the semifinals 9:30 a.m. today.
John Carswell
Tremper singles player John Carswell also had a successful day.
After a first-round bye, the sixth-seeded freshman dominated in his first two matches. He defeated Middleton junior Ian Markson, 6-3, 6-0, and Eau Claire Memorial freshman Matt Delmastro, 6-1, 6-2.
Carswell’s run ended in the quarterfinals as Marquette freshman Damon Niquet, the No. 3 seed, posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Still in the running for fifth place, Carswell (28-2) will play Plymouth senior Andrea Lofino (24-3) 8:30 a.m. today.
David Carswell
Tremper senior David Carswell (27-5) topped Mukwonago freshman Jake Diesler in his second-round match, 6-1, 6-4, and that earned him a shot against top-seeded Alex Jesse of Homestead. Jesse prevailed against the four-time state qualifier, 6-1, 6-3.
Bradford entrants
Bradford’s top doubles team of Anthony Greco and Florian Dorgerloh built off the momentum of Thursday’s first-round victory by knocking off Oshkosh North’s Brett Hamm and Alex Koch in the second round, 6-1, 7-6 (12). Hamm and Koch were among the doubles teams seeded 9-16.
The run ended there for the Bradford seniors (14-6) as they lost to Pecor and Katzban, 6-2, 6-2.
After winning his first-round match on Thursday, Bradford sophomore Michael Savaglio (18-4) dropped a three-set heartbreaker in the second round to Lofino, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
