Johnson Thao scored in the 26th minute as the UW-Parkside men’s soccer team edged Southern Indiana 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday at Wood Road Field.

The Rangers improved to 2-1-1 in the GLVC (6-1-1 overall). Parkside was ranked fourth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of American Midwest Region poll.

The game’s lone goal was created off of a hustle play from Cyril Simmons. The senior forward tracked down the ball from a 50-yard sprint and delivered a pass to Thao. It was Thao’s fifth goal of the season and team-leading 12th point.

“That was an effort goal,” Parkside assistant coach Jason Zitzke said. “Cyril made something happen and created that goal.”

Parkside held the Screamin’ Eagles (2-2, 2-3) to just 13 shots in recording its fifth shutout of the season. Ranger goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman recorded five saves.

Zitzke credited the play of the defense, led by Tim Thao, Jason Moxley, Dave Mercer, Andrew Krenzien and Lieberman.

“Those five guys were totally organized and controlled that zone of the field,” Zitzke said. “Defensively, this is the first time we were totally solid for ninety minutes.”

Parkside hosts Kentucky Wesleyan in a GLVC match 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wood Road Field.

UW-P women tie

The UW-P women’s soccer team remained undefeated in playing to a 1-1 tie against GLVC foe Southern Indiana at Wood Road Field.

Freshman Madison Picket tied the match in the 77th minute on an assist from Shannon Becker. The score remained 1-1 after regulation and neither team was able to find the back of the net in each of the 10-minute overtime periods.

Parkside, ranked 17th in the latest NSCAA Division-2 poll, outshot the Screamin’ Eagles, 21-12.

The Rangers (4-0-2, 3-0-1) host Kentucky Wesleyan in a GLVC match noon Sunday at Wood Road Field.
