Reds swept in debut

The Carthage softball team opened its season with two losses Sunday in Kissimmee, Fla.

In Game 1, a 6-5 Benedictine win, Carthage’s Kari Peterson hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Alyssa Schrader added a three-run shot in the sixth to give the Reds a 5-4 lead.

But Benedictine scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the victory as Carthage reliever Krystina Leazer took the loss.

In Game 2, a 6-2 Aurora victory, Peterson prevented a shutout with another two-run homer.

The Reds (0-2) committed a total of five errors in the two games.

“We had couple errors in each game and instead of getting out of the inning it kind of snowballed,” Carthage coach Amy Gillmore said. “It wasn’t the way we wanted to start, but we’re a good team. We just didn’t show it today.”

Sophomore Dan Hurst collected his third win of the season with five saves. Freshman Nick Condon, a Christian Brothers graduate, returned to his home field and scored his first collegiate hat trick, including the game-winning score in the first period.
