Red Men drop wild one on diamond
Two days after becoming only the 17th baseball coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 700-victory plateau, Carthage coach Augie Schmidt was unable to add to his total.
The ninth-ranked Red Men came up on the short end of a 14-10 donnybrook with No. 2 College of Wooster on Monday at North Charlotte Regional Park in North Port, Fla.
“Sandwiched around some terrible baseball, we hit the ball well against some quality pitching,” Schmidt said. “Everything else was terrible.”
Four Carthage pitchers combined to issue six walks and hit seven batters. Starter Dave Foss worked the first 22/3 innings. Andy Pucher entered the game in the third, Matt Martinski in the seventh and Chadd Ori in the seventh.
Joey Aiello went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Zach Kozlowski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Trevor Whately had a three-run triple to lead the Carthage offense.
Carthage (2-2) and Wooster (2-0) will meet again on Friday.
The Red Men will next play Muskingum (Ohio) University 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at North County Regional Park. Carthage senior right-hander Chris Krepline is expected to make his first appearance on the mound since April 5, 2008.
Schmidt recorded his 700th victory on Saturday night in a 10-6 triumph over Ohio Wesleyan. In 23 seasons, the Kenosha native is 701-276-5 overall (.716).
Under Schmidt, Carthage has claimed eight outright CCIW divisional titles, one divisional-title tie, nine conference crowns, 16 NCAA regional berths, including nine in a row from 1992-2000, six regional titles, third-place finishes in both the 1993 and 1994 NCAA Division III World Series and fourth place in both 1995 and 1997.
For his efforts, Schmidt has been named American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond Sports Division III Central Regional Coach Of The Year nine times, won the ABCA/Louisville Slugger Conference Award seven times from 1993-99, and has been named CCIW Baseball Coach of the Year on 10 occasions.
