Monday’s game: The Joliet JackHammers busted open a back-and-forth game with a six-run fifth inning and held off the Lake County Fielders 11-9 in front of an announced crowd of 3,320 in Zion, Ill. ... The teams combined for 28 hits, 13 of the extra-base variety. ... Josh Short, Brian McFall and Anthony Esquer had three hits apiece to pace the Fielders’ 17-hit attack. ... Joliet hit five home runs, including two by leadoff man Jonathan Wyatt. ... McFall had the Fielders’ lone long ball. ... Gary Bakker allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings, but Corey Bass took the loss allowing four runs in less than an inning of relief.
Getting the All-Star call: Short and Amos Ramon were tabbed to represent the Northern League when they take on the Golden Baseball League’s All-Stars at Hi Corbett Field in Tuscon, Ariz., on July 14. ... Ramon is eighth in the league in batting average (.313). Ramon has 41 hits, six doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI. ... Short is batting .299 and is second in the league in home runs with 12. He leads the Fielders with 46 hits and 30 RBI.
