This week’s “Sports Take” is about great performances.

Former St. Joseph running back Adrian Davis had a season full of them in 2001. Everyone on the sports desk took in their fair share of Lancers games during that magical season but it was the “record book game” I lean on as the greatest performance I’ve ever witnessed.

The “A-Train” rushed for 312 yards on a season-high 46 carries with four touchdowns as St. Joseph bested Auburndale 27-21 on Nov. 9, 2001, in a WIAA Division-5 State semifinal in Baraboo.

Not only did the Lancers advance to finish as State runner-up, Davis’ performance against Auburndale pushed him past the 3,000-yard mark for the season. His historic campaign ended with the state single-season rushing record of 3,422 yards.

That’s my take. We want to know yours. You can send us the greatest performance you’ve witnessed either by e-mail at sports@kenoshanews.com or by commenting on our Web site or Facebook page.

Responses will be published in Sunday’s Kenosha News.

Sports Night leftovers

n While high school honorees Alyse Mikolas and David Carswell delivered solid speeches and the celebrities did their usual thing, Bruce Heckmann stole the show.

The Shoreland Lutheran girls basketball coach, honored for his longtime service, began with a stellar joke and followed with a tightly packaged, reference-filled speech applying sports metaphor toward everyday life.

I didn’t attend Shoreland, so my interaction with Coach Heckmann has been purely professional over the years. But after the short speech, I understand why he had an impact on so many lives in the Shoreland community. I came away inspired.

n Holy Rosary Sports Night history was made back in December. When the Athlete of the Year selection committee met, a full slate of 14 candidates were presented. All seven county schools had participated in the past, but this was the first time each school submitted both a male and female candidate for consideration.

Book it

Matt Kenseth failed to make it back-to-back victories at the Daytona 500, dropping my prediction mark to 3-7 for the year.

This week, I’m doubling up on Marquette. The Golden Eagles will continue their push to an NCAA Tournament berth by knocking off No. 19 Pittsburgh tonight before surviving a matchup at Cincinnati on Sunday.
