Good start in state tennis
Kenosha County boys high school tennis is alive and well.
With three singles players and two doubles teams advancing to the round of 32, the WIAA Division-1 State Individual Tournament will have a definite local flavor today at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.
On Friday, Tremper senior David Carswell cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Arrowhead junior Matt Miller in his first-round singles match.

John Carswell on top of his game in Indy
Carswell (26-4), a four-time state qualifier who is among the players seeded 9-16, will face Mukwonago freshman Jake Diesler (18-2) in the second round 8:30 a.m. today. The winner will most likely play top-seeded Alex Jesse of Homestead (27-1) in the third round at 1:30 p.m.
Savaglio moving on
Bradford sophomore Michael Savaglio was also victorious in his State Tournament debut. He prevailed over Stevens Point sophomore Chalee Sriprasert, 6-1, 4-6 (4) in the opening round. In first-round matches at the State Tournament, a tie-breaker is used in lieu of a third set.
Savaglio (18-3) will take on Plymouth senior Andrea Lofino (22-2) in the second round 10 a.m. today. Lofino, who also won by tie-breaker in the first round, is among the players seeded 9-16.
Tremper freshman John Carswell (26-1) received a first-round bye as the No. 6 seed. He will play Middleton junior Ian Markson in the second round 10 a.m. today.
Greco, Dorgerloh win
Bradford capped a perfect day when its senior doubles team of Anthony Greco and Florian Dorgerloh cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wisconsin Rapids seniors Alex Gilmaster and Chris Steiner.
Greco and Dorgerloh (13-5) will play Oshkosh North juniors Brett Hamm and Alex Koch (8-3) in the second round 8:30 a.m. today.
Hamm and Koch are among the doubles teams seeded 9-16.
Tremper’s doubles team of Adam Gagliardi and Jake Riley (20-10) wasn’t as fortunate. They dropped their first-round match to Brookfield Central’s Kenny Reichert and Kevin Schmidt, 6-3, 6-3.
Tremper’s top-seeded doubles team of Connor Hildebrandt and Jake Humphreys also had a bye.
They will meet Sheboygan North’s Zach Gosse and Jack Trager (18-8) in the second round 8:30 a.m. today.
