Carthage teams hitting the road
An NCAA Division III basketball sectional will not be played at Tarble Arena this weekend.
The Carthage men’s and women’s basketball teams both advanced to the Sweet 16 in their respective Division III Tournaments on Saturday.
On Sunday, the teams found out that they will be hitting the road in the next round.
The 14th-ranked Red Men will travel to Stevens Point for a four-team sectional at UW-Stevens Point’s Quandt Fieldhouse. Carthage (24-5) will take on CCIW rival Illinois Wesleyan (22-7) in a sectional semifinal game on Friday. In the other semifinal, No. 5 UW-Stevens Point (25-4) will face No. 19 University of Texas-Dalas (24-5).
This will be the fourth meeting this season between the Red Men and Titans. The teams split during the regular season and Carthage posted a 70-67 victory in the championship of the CCIW Tournament on Feb. 27 at Tarble Arena.
Wesleyan advanced with a 75-70 victory over top-ranked and defending national champion Washington (Mo.) on Saturday at the Washington Field House in St. Louis.
After winning two tournament games over the weekend at UW-Whitewater, the Carthage women’s team will travel to St. Louis for a four-team section at Washington University.
The 14th-ranked Reds (24-4) will play fifth-ranked and defending national champion George Fox (Ore.) University (27-2) in a sectional semifinal contest on Friday. In the other semifinal, No. 6 and national runner-up Washington (25-2) will play No. 27 Mount Union (26-4).
The semifinal winners will meet for a Final Four berth on Saturday.
The times of the games will be announced today.
