A convicted sex offender has been charged with assaulting a 6-year-old girl.

John A. Dodson, 19, was homeless and staying with family friends when the alleged abuse happened in February, a criminal complaint says.

According to the complaint, Dodson inappropriately touched the girl three times in one week while staying at a home in the 4900 block of 36th Avenue in Kenosha. An examination also showed signs of physical assault.

Relatives learned of the situation after finding the child with her pants down and Dodson locked in a nearby bathroom. Dodson then ran from the home, the complaint says.

Dodson is charged as a repeat offender with three counts of child sexual assault and one count of failing to update his sex offender registration. If convicted, he faces at least 75 years in prison.

Dodson was convicted in September 2006 for child sexual assault and ordered to register as a sex offender. He was released from jail in November 2009, and provided an address in the 6700 block of 31st Avenue as of Dec. 8, 2009, the complaint says.

However, a letter mailed to that address, with instructions to return the letter within 10 days, had not been returned as of Feb. 11, 2010.

Dodson also has convictions for carrying a concealed weapon, shoplifting and having drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanors.

He is in custody because he has not posted a $75,000 cash bond.
