Catherine Chalmers: American Cockroach
July 30
Racine Art Museum Internationally known photographer Catherine Chalmers communicates a respect for nature by focusing on one of its lowliest creatures—the cockroach. This mid-career survey of large-scale color images includes three bodies of the artist’s photographs and a number of her recent videos. In her large works, Chalmers documents roaches living in an insect-sized dollhouse and roaches that have been painted to camouflage their bodies amongst flower petals. In another series, insects that have died a natural death are staged in mock executions, hanging in gallows and sitting in small electric chairs. The artist creates these images to humanize these insects and call out attention to the preciousness of all life.

Although this exhibition features Chalmers’ work on the cockroach as subject matter, her subjects also include the life cycles of other small insects and animals. Her work is included in major museum collections around the world.

Jennifer Angus: Patterns of Insect Life
July 30
Racine Art Museum This exhibition features a walk-in environment in which the artist creates dioramas and wallpaper-like installations that are made up of actual insects. Jennifer Angus pins their small bodies to walls creating decorative patterns that recall wallpapers and other decorative treatments for interior spaces. Her use of insects as a decorative element in her environments calls our attention to their inherent beauty and her dioramas create small fantasy worlds for these creatures.

South East Wisconsin Opera Fest
July 30
Reuther Auditorium 913 57th St Kenosha WI
Kenosha WI - Southeast Wisconsin Performing Arts (SEWPA) presents an Opera Festival of fun for the Kenosha area and all of Southeast WI. All performances are at the Reuther Auditorium, 913 57th St., Kenosha, WI. Starting with the delightful production of “The Emperor’s new Clothes” performing on Thursday July 23 @ 2:00pm. The show is a steal at $5.00 a ticket. The festival continues Friday and Saturday, with two operas each day, Cenerentola and Magic Flute. One ticket gets you into both shows! Pre-sale tickets are $9.00 for adults and $7.00 for children. To purchase tickets go to the SEWPA website: www.sewpa.org

The Italian opera Cenerentola, narrated by Kenosha’s own, Gus Gnorski of WITI Fox 6 News, on opening night, July 24, is based off the story of Cinderella and is complete with English super titles and witty comic skits. It runs only one hour in length, so it may share the stage with Mozart’s hilariously funny Magic Flute sung in English. Both of the operas are completely staged with full sets, costumes, and up-and-coming young artist in lead roles. The following weekend, July 30th & 31st, the opera festival continues with the vibrant opera Carmen and Comic opera Don Giovanni. Both are in English with complete sets and have been modified so as to enjoy both in one evening. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience opera that is meant for families to share – as a musically rewarding and entertaining experience.

SEWPA was developed and made into a nonprofit organization to foster the Fine Arts through education, audience outreach and performance. Offering opera, dance, choral and instrumental music, SEWPA gives young people (ages 5-26) the opportunity to take classes that will inspire and engage them, directed by some of the most talented professionals in the area. SEWPA provides a safe and encouraging environment that gives each young performer, not only the skills necessary to becoming an artist, but also to become confident young adults.

What happens after we pass from this world? Is there a life after this one? Or do we just disappear forever? These are the questions asked in this powerful and poignant feature documentary, Infinity: The Ultimate Trip. Many may be surprised by the answers.

Featuring noted experts Neale Donald Walsch, Gregg Braden, Robert Thurman, Dannion Brinkley, Renate Dollinger. Stanislav Grof, John Holland, Dzogchen Ponlop, , Alberto Villoldo, and Brian Weiss, Infinity: The Ultimate Trip brings a message of hope and optimism concerning the most mysterious act in a human life; the end of this life and journey to the beyond.

Using vital and beautiful imagery, along with personal accounts of near-death experiences, reincarnation and more, Infinity brings forth the story of our own infinite nature, what to expect after death and the magic and beauty that awaits us on the other side.
